Google announced that it’s shutting down Ply, it’s 3D object library and platform that was launched in 2017 solely for VR and AR creators. The company said the users rely on its product only when they feel insecure. By June 30, 2021, do not expect to see a 3D model or get any service from it so it’s advisable to download any models before then.
The company began showing signs of doing immediately when it stopped selling its Daydream VR headsets and shut down its Spotlight Stories VR studio along with the Daydream Play Movies and TV app.
Poly was originally created to help developers create low-poly VR objects while hosting a library of assets that could be used in VR games and experiences. With this, you have easier ways to create assets than tools like Google’s Tilt Brush or advanced 3D creation apps from Autodesk and Blender.
As Poly is about to be shut down, Sketchfab is also a good alternative for VR creators, the company tweeted that it “just became profitable, so we are here to stay”. Google noted that “everything you share becomes VR/AR ready.”
