To Redline is a way of editing by which red ink is used to identify the removal or addition of text in Microsoft Word (here you can find out more about what does it mean to redline a document). You can be able to redline a Microsoft Word document by making use of the Microsoft Word’s inbuilt “Track Changes” feature, or you can do it manually by redlining the document with font color changes and strikethrough. The “Track Changes” is the best for large-scale editing and feedback. On the other hand, manual redlining is best suited for the smaller documents and papers that are sent between various versions of Word.

How You Can Redline Documents on Microsoft Word

Below are the steps on how to redline documents on Microsoft word:

With the Use of Track Changes

  • The first step to take is to open the document that you want to edit.
  • Then from the toolbar seen at the top of your screen, tap on the “review” tab. In this tab, you will see tools that will help with spell checking and editing, as well as “track changes” feature.
  • After that, tap on the track changes tab in order to enable track changes.
  • Then click open the dropdown menu that you will see beside the track changes button. From the menu, you can choose how advanced you want your change tracking to be.
  • Click on “all markup”.
  • Then tap on the “show markup” dropdown. From this dropdown, you can select the elements of track changes to display.
  • The next thing is to highlight some text, and tap on “new comment” from the comment section of the toolbar.
  • Then you can edit the document as you wish.
  • Tap on “accept” in order to save the things you edited.

By Redlining Manually

  • First, open the document you want to edit.
  • Then tap on the “home” tab. It contains some tools such as; italicizing, underlining, and text bolding.
  • Then search for the strike through button from the toolbar. You can see it beside the underline button.
  • Click on the font color button from the toolbar.
  • You can be able to change the “Font Color” by tapping on the bar below the symbol “A”, then choose a new color from the drop-down menu.
  • Tap and drag your mouse cursor over the section of text in order to select it.
  • Then tap on the “strike through” button so as to place a line through the selected text.
  • You need to make sure that there is a space in-between the next word and the end of the strike through. If not, the next text that you will type will automatically have a line through it.
  • Then you can place your cursor at the end of the space after the strike through text.
  • Tap on the font color button.
  • The add the text for replacement after the strike through text.
  • You need to make sure that any other additions are in your color editing because you need to show clearly the text you added to the document.
  • You can repeat the steps until your document is completely edited.
  • Then click on file at the top on the left and click on save to save the document or you can just press Ctrl+ S to save.
